Review

“Fischer break[s] his narrative into chapters and makes subjective calls along the way. Since sports fans love a good argument, there’s nothing wrong with that approach and the author supports his opinions with many appropriate game details. [T]he sidebars — for instance, ‘The Best Who Never Lost,’ ‘The Best Who Never Won’ — offer a slew of interesting angles and insights.’ --Newsday

I purchased two copies as Christmas Gifts and both people said it was the perfect gift for them.

Great

Ordered this brand new and the cover was ripped. I still gave it as a gift, but disappointed that it didn’t look brand new.

I bought this for a family Christmas guys gift. The first one to get it would not let it go to anyone else. They absolutely loved it! I should have bought two so I had one for myself!

Great book for all Super Bowl fans! And NFL!

grandson loves it

David Fischer writes a great history of the Super Bowl in this book with awesome pictures and amazing stats from the greatest annual sporting event. He shows how some made it look so easy (Tom Brady with 13 TDs in 6 SBs) while others couldn't get out of their own way (Rich Gannon throwing 5 INTs in one game). A nice foreword by SB Legend Franco Harris is a hard act to follow but Fischer is able to hold the reader's interest for another 175+ pages. He weaves in stories around the games such as what was going on in the world that year as well as who was playing the halftime show. Very informative and nostalgic for me as I have seen about 40 of the 50 games.

This book is a great reminder of the classic teams that have defined football history in the modern era, from the Green Bay Packers of the mid-1960s right up to the New England Patriots of today. The game summaries bring you right back into the action, and the sidebars such as "The Best Who Never Lost" and "Pantheon of Heroes" put the stars' achievements in perspective. The photographs are fantastic. A must for any serious football fan.

The author could have said and written the same book in one third of the pages, because most of the observations and information are repeated again and again and the writer is a very boring writer. He can put you to sleep many times during the process of reading the book. I had to force myself to finish it.He writes like a teenager fascinated by his idol and the company he founded, but he fails to go deeper in the mind of Steve/Apple. Possibly because he never had a close relationship with Steve J. and he is only getting information from third parties and again his observations are very flat & superficial. You will be able to find this kind of information and so much more in other better business books .Save your money and get a book written by the person doing and implementing the creative thinking (owner, entrepreneur, etc etc)

WOW! What can't I say about this MAGICAL book. I swear, I read tons of business books and books about everything. This book is a rare book. Apple is a RARE company. Apple is mega successful because of the vision Jobs had and this book shares some of his magic with you. All businesses need a book like this. I always get a joy when I walk into an apple store, I am a proud owner of apple products. This book teaches YOU and ME so much about how a superior business runs and functions. If you are an business owner or an entrepreneur grab this book NOW!It was a pleasure to read this book and I want to thank Steve Jobs and the author for making it all possible :)PS-This book has opened my eyes to so much possibilities.....

Straight forward look about how customer service applied effectively can change your business and set you above your competitors. Apple set the standard and you can model after their success, and many others that are masters at customer service and creativity.

I purchased the book to see if I could take some of the ideas that Apple uses to train their employees and give their customers the perfect experience. I restructured a lot of my business based on the information I received from this book. I highly recommend it for any corporate executive, business owner, and it works really well when I consult with non profits organizations too.

Love it! Got this copy for a friend who just got a job at the local Apple store. He loves the book!

Interesting book with good information.

Apple and customer loyalty go hand and hand. Excellent read about a great company

Great book for anyone with a customer facing career or business

We Are On Our Own: A Memoir, by Miriam Katin

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This moving WWII memoir is the debut graphic novel from Katin, an animator for Disney and MTV. It tells the story of toddler Katin—here called Lisa—and her mother, Esther Levy, Hungarian Jews who must flee Nazi persecution. With her husband off fighting in the Hungarian army, Esther is forced to abandon all their belongings and take on the identity of a servant girl with a bastard child. She survives however she can—whether making alterations on the bloodstained uniforms of dead soldiers or surrendering her body to an adulterous German officer. Katin shows Esther's harrowing experiences with an objective eye, but her own experience of the time is the fragmented memory of a child; unable to understand the vast tragedy unfolding around her, she focuses on the loss of a pet dog. The story flashes forward to the '70s and even later to show the long-term effects on Katin and her family's faith. Katin's art is an impressionistic swirl; early scenes in sophisticated Budapest recall the elegance of Helen Hokinson, while the chaos of war is captured in dark, chaotic compositions reminiscent of Kathe Kollwitz. This book is a powerful reminder of the lingering price of survival. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The burgeoning popularity of graphic novels has opened the door to new voices with compelling stories and artistic skills to match; for example, 63-year-old animator Katin, whose remarkable debut this is. It is a memoir recounting how she and her mother faked their deaths and fled Budapest after the Nazis occupied the city. With forged papers obtained from a black marketer, they escaped to the countryside in the guise of a servant girl and her illegitimate child. Katin relates their harrowing lives there and her mother's desperate search for her missing husband after the war. Brief passages set decades later reveal how Katin's traumatic experiences left her without any religious faith to pass on to her own child. The events she reports are powerful in themselves, and her sensitive, softly expressive drawings and straightforward storytelling, both reminiscent of Raymond Briggs in Ethel & Ernest (1999), about an English couple during the same period, are likewise effective in conveying violent wartime battles, her mother's emotionally distressing choices, and rare quiet interludes. Moreover, Katin's understatement makes the story all the more chilling and heartbreaking. This impressive book belongs in all serious graphic novel collections and is also a natural for Jewish studies. Gordon FlaggCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Growing up in the Westside of Cleveland in the 1950's, I had many chances to meet people who were displaced Europeans settling in America. In fact there were so many of these people a colloquial and derogatory term was placed to identify these people being the phrase "DP". In essence all these people were trying to do was to seek a new life in America. Little did I know of any of their stories in which they had to endure to get to the shores of the promised new land. One such story is Marian Katin's graphic depiction of her mother and herself fleeing Budapest under Nazi rule in 1944. The very fact that they were Jewish as late as 1944 under Nazi rule gives one the sense that it took a long time for some Nazi occupied countries to be affected by the genocidical programs inherent to this regime. Katin's story which tells of the Nazi terror and later the Soviet invasion shows the true plight of how people lost their homes and in many cases their very lives in the collateral damage of war. Katin's images and narrative show the true emotional and psychological scars of what transpired. The book shows a true and uncensored depiction of true events of a world gone mad. People acting under stress conditions show both their humanistic qualities to help mankind no matter what country they were from and on the other hand people acting selfishly and thinking only of themselves. This story is of people being people under the stress of a world at war caused by political minds seeking their own selfish ends. This graphic story should be added to all the serious historical accumulation of World War II studies showing what this war was truly about. This book is actual history shown in the graphic genre which deserves our serious attention. Very well done and deserving a high five star rating.

The title of Miriam Katin's graphic memoir, We Are On Our Own, is the subtext and conclusion of the story of her survival in Nazi-occupied Hungary. It's one of the most powerful and relentless memoirs I've ever read, graphic or otherwise. For sheer honesty, it ranks right up there with Wiesel's Night, Bechdel's Fun Home, and Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar.Katin's recollections concern the final weeks of WWII, when the Nazis occupying Hungary know that the game is nearly over and the Soviet Army is advancing. Miriam, who's a girl of 5 or 6, and her mother Esther flee Budapest just before the last of the Jews are rounded up. Disguising themselves as gentile peasants, they resettle in the countryside, where Esther finds herself doing what she must to survive--including becoming the mistress of the local Nazi commandant. The tale is gripping: anti-Semetic Hungarians, brutal Nazis, panic and selfishness dancing with compassion and sacrifice. Esther emerges as an incredibly admirable woman. The memoir begins with Esther reading the Biblical creation story to Miriam. But as the harrowing story unfolds, whatever faith in a benevolent and protective God that Miriam and Esther might've had drops away. Time and again, they realize that they, like all humanity, are on their own. The recollections are intercut with contemporary scenes in which Miriam, now a grown woman and still without religious faith, is conflicted about her own child going to Hebrew school and temple. We Are on Our Own's honesty is refreshing as well as potentially disturbing. How can one survive the Holocaust with a comfortable faith--or any faith, for that matter--intact? This is a question too frequently sidestepped, because the answer to it can be unpleasant. Katin doesn't shy away.

Miriam's narrative document is an emotional rollercoaster that manages to be both utterly crushing and inspiring simultaneously.

Miriam Katin is my wife of 51 years so perhaps I should recuse myself from a review.

Well presented. Anxious to read.

I saw this in an art exhibit, ended up buying and reading the book, well drawn, good author and artist

I read about this author in a scholarly article and wanted to read her book. It's quite moving.

This simply, yet strongly drawn & illustrated graphic novel will remain in your memory for quite some time. Imagine a graphic novel of a younger Ann Frank's life, with a happy ending. Or is it?This is the story of Miriam & her mother. Two Jews in Hungary. Miriam's father is fighting in the Hungarian Army. Life is becoming harder for Jews in Budapest. Miriam's mother fears what will happen & instead of staying & hoping for the best, like the vast majority of Jews sadly did; she chooses to run.Miriam is just about four. Her mother leaves almost all their possessions & leaves behind their family & friends. Her mother disguises herself as a peasant & Miriam is passed off as her illegitimate daughter. Miriam's mother even thought about faking their own deaths, so that no one would come looking for them. Her mother finds them shelter where she can. Miriam is quite straightforward in her telling. Her mother was especially brave. She does all she needs to do in order to keep both of them alive. Even, if it means allowing a German Nazi officer to have sex with her each night, so he will not denounce them as Jews. That episode ends when his Mistress finds out & she intends to denounce Miriam's mother. They flee in the nick of time.Eventually, the war ends. Miriam's mother searches for her husband. The Jewish man in charge of the search & rescue committee which is helping her, befriends her. He falls in love with her, but also learns the husband is alive & is also searching for his wife & child. Soon after, the illustrations end. There are two more pages telling in brief the story of this family in the ensuing years.Find this book. Read it. Be moved by it. Share it with others.

Review

"From time to time, something happens that requires us to change the way we typically act, either temporarily or permanently. The publication of Jay Hughes' second book, Family: The Compact Among Generations, for me, is one of these events.... My wish for all our readers is that they will take the time to read the book--in the active sense of the word 'read'--and experience the same pleasure of discovery and mind expansion as I did." —Jean Brunel writing in the Journal of Wealth Management "Jay's words dance off the page as he shares his theory and practice on how we all can inspire future generations to create and fulfill their dreams. His disciplined research and common-sense practices are mustreading for anyone interested in making the world a better place and living every day to its fullest. How fortunate that Jay Hughes has shared his wisdom for all to read." —Jesse Fink President, Marshall Street Management "Jay Hughes, the wisest of counselors to successful families, brings a Renaissance man's perspective to the most fundamental challenges of family, of wealth, and of continuity. He also brings a deep confidence and optimism for human nature and for the future. Thousands of families have heard Jay's messages. With this book, new generations of counselors will be able to support even more families. That's a great gift.  "The deep wisdom Jay shares in this book can only be the result of decades of experience and a special, genuine care for families. His conviction for stewardship is exemplified by this sharing of his unique wisdom with others who counsel families. This book gives honest hope to families seeking healthy and successful continuity, and also to those who serve them and who share Jay's sincere concern.  "This is the best book ever written for counselors to business families. Thank you, Jay, for sharing your wisdom and passion." —John L. Ward Principal, The Family Business Consulting Group Clinical Professor of Family Enterprises, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University "Jay Hughes has changed both the philosophy and vocabulary in family-wealth advising. He is both an historian and innovator, creating context and advice for those families who define their success in much more than financial terms." —Ellen M. Perry Founder, Wealthbridge Partners, LLC "Family: The Compact Among Generations is fundamentally a book of deep, translational wisdom based on Jay Hughes's remarkable reading of philosophy, religion, and psychology as they apply to the complex journey of family life. The book is based on Hughes's lifetime of service and counsel to families of great wealth, but as I read the book and began to understand its central metaphor--"shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations"--words other than family kept coming to mind, words like community, society, and citizenship. Hughes may not have intended the metaphor to apply to the journey of the human race, but in a world precariously balanced between disastrous decline and the potential for the resolution of major social dilemmas, it is the investment in human capital and the awakening of the citizen within that will tell the difference.  "This book is a gift. Read it. And when you do, consider its wisdom from your individual and family persona and your public persona." —Peter Karoff Founder and Chairman, The Philanthropic Initiative

From the Back Cover

Family The COMPACT AMONG GENERATIONS It's an unfortunate but common pattern: A family achieves wealth and stability but can't sustain its success beyond the second generation. An enterprise fails, a dynasty is lost, and pain and suffering prevail. In Family: The Compact Among Generations, James Hughes presents the reasons and the remedies for this phenomenon. The book is a journey of discovery. Drawing on evidence from ancient history, political science, psychology, physics, organizational science, and a myriad of other disciplines and spiritual traditions, Hughes makes seemingly discordant pieces fit to form a whole that is both instructive and inspiring. Distilled through this seasoned observer of families, the wisdom and insights of some of the finest minds in history make sense in a new way—a way that can truly help families overcome their most formidable challenges. Bringing to bear decades of experience working with and studying families, he maps the mistakes that lead to decline and the approaches to family governance and personal development that can prevent it.

MY RATING SYSTEM:* - if you have to chose between torture and reading this book, then you might want to consider reading the book - although it depends on just how severe the torture would be.** - if you've lost your job and have quite a bit of free time on your hands, and don't have anything else better to do, then you might want to consider reading this book; don't expect to learn much or really be entertained. It will however, help you pass the time until your death.*** - meh...I'm indifferent. Reading this book will not alter your life in any significant way, yet it is not so horrendously dreadful that your taking the time to read it will be a complete waste of time.**** - Good book to great book zone here. You should probably read this book if you have some spare time. This book could be interesting, entertaining, or informative.***** - Outstanding book! Make time to read this book - you'll learn or be entertained or intrigued. The book might even be good enough to provide original or helpful insights into the world that we live in.REVIEW:In his first book, Family Wealth, James E. Hughes Jr. first set out his belief that the goal of business families should be to enhance the human and intellectual capital of the family. While this same theme permeates throughout Family: The Compact..., Hughes' second book takes a much more round-about journey through the ideas and philosophies that contribute to the family dynamic and influence its success. While a great deal of the book contains a survey of philosophical, anthropological, and psychological ideas and how they relate to families in business and how such families can increase their likelihood of seven-generation success, there are some very important ideas that I picked up as I read. Below I'll set out some of the main themes of the book and some other valuable nuggets of wisdom that I took away from it.Hughes continually references the idea of 'seven-generation thinking' - viewing the family as an entity that will continue to thrive for seven generations - and maintains that families who adopt this mindset and seek to ensure the well-being of the family over the very long run will improve their odds of avoiding falling prey to the 'shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations' proverb.Another notion that Hughes discusses often is that of a 'family of affinity'. Hughes claims that families should be defined, not by blood only, but rather by certain bonds of affinity, and that excluding those who share those bonds because they don't share blood (think in-laws, spouses, etc.) fails to adopt the philosophy that a family should seek to enhance its human capital. While the issue of in-laws and non-blood family is often a tricky one to deal with in practice, and while Hughes doesn't offer many practical tips on how to deal with the tensions, jealousies and other difficulties that often arise in such situations, I would imagine that he would subscribe to the school of thought which holds that where a set of shared values exists among those individuals, any problems can be resolved. Not everyone needs to have the same goals, but shared values would be immensely influential in achieving a harmonious relationship. On the issue of individual goals, Hughes highlights one of the most difficult challenges faced by families in business, especially those of the second generation - how to prioritize the goals and dreams of the second generation when they are different from those of the first. Hughes states that family members must assist in the individuation and differentiation of the second generation, and help each member of that generation to achieve his or her own personal dream. In the long run, a family comprised of members that follow their own paths in life is likely to achieve greater happiness and success than a family comprised of individuals who are forced or coerced into roles and lives that they would otherwise not choose for themselves. Hughes also mentions that without the emergence of a new dream from the second generation, the first generation's dream is likely to fizzle out and the enterprise will suffer. His prescription for dealing with the 'new' dreams of the second generation is for the family leadership to recognize those dreams and the conflicts they may present and attempt to integrate those dreams into the family's vision. As he states, "Unless [the family] incorporates the aspirations of new generations, it cannot attract them."On the role of the family in the management and ownership of the business, Hughes observes that from his experience, most family businesses fail because of poor ownership, not poor management. Hughes introduces the role of 'steward-conservator' for members of the family, suggesting that all family members be engaged by the responsibility of ownership and creating the strategic vision for the company. Personally, I find Hughes' discussion of this issue somewhat unsatisfying. While I believe there is merit in what seems to underlie his view - that a family that engages all members is more likely to succeed over the long term - I wish there was more discussion of how to organize family governance structures in practice. For example, it's not clear whether Hughes means to suggest that as steward-conservators all family members should be active in setting the strategic vision of the company in the same way that a board of directors might be considered to set the strategic vision. If this is indeed his suggestion, then I respectfully disagree. In my opinion, deciding upon an appropriate strategy is not a simple task that should be entrusted to anyone merely on the basis of their family status. I am of the opinion that while family might be best intentioned, they are not always best able. Ultimately, I believe that ability (which is most often developed through education and experience) should dictate who is responsible for setting the strategic vision, since such a task demands sophisticated, analytical and engaged minds. Also it must be remembered that those who are best able to manage the business are not always the ones who are best able to set its strategic vision. All that being said, I do agree with the idea that all the family should be engaged with/by the business, but perhaps this is better achieved through a family council or assembly that engages the board of directors and re-affirms the family's shared set of values which serve as a framework within which the strategic vision must advance. I would be very interested in reading more about Hughes' clients and the various governance structures that were used, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each. One last idea that I'll mention is that of the 'leader from behind'. Hughes references Lao Tzu's notion of the leader 'who is never seen, never heard, and never felt, but is revered for one thousand years by his followers for his excellent leadership' or more commonly described as the leaders who's followers say 'we did it ourselves.' Hughes states that this type of 'leader from behind' is the type of leader that is important in family businesses, especially in the second generation, because this type of leader can maintain a sever-generation outlook and encourage individual family members to follow their individual dreams, thereby enhancing the family as a whole.All-in-all, I found this to be another interesting book from Hughes, and although personally I wasn't a huge fan of the some of the extensive anthro, psych, philo discussions, that content definitely demonstrates the level of passion that Hughes has for the subject matter and the depths to which his life's journey has taken him in search for the many bits of wisdom that might help families avoid the 'shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves' proverb.

With the increase in financially comfortable, well-to-do, and extremely wealthy families has come a need for literature which prepares heirs to meet the financial, human, and intellectual challenges they face as they work to develop successful, long-lasting families and legacies. Most such families are aware of and want to overcome the well-known "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" syndrome: from broke to broke or from little to little in three generations as family cohesivesness and motivation wane. While much of the current literature on family success and legacy focuses on financial aspects, James E. Hughes concentrates on the human and intellectual issues of successful families, though he does not ignore financial concerns. Not does he limit his advice to the wealthy; all families who want to prepare their future members to develop successful legacies could find much of value in his writings. His previous book, "Family Wealth: Keeping it in the Family," offered guidelines for conserving family assets by delineating practices, principles, and the roles of experts who can assist with these tasks, concentrating on the jobs of family members as they attempt to develop a cohesive structure for family preservation and legacy. This book, "Family: The Compact Among Generations," continues this discussion, but emphasizes designs and schema for family educational programs that help family leaders direct succeeding leaders and generations in their tasks. He believes that the successful family works to help family members fulfill their dreams, visions, goals, and hearts' desires as a means of enriching the expanding family and increasing its worth. He urges members to set up structures that allow this to happen. These suggestions are as specific as providing lists of psychological tests that help family members identify their hearts' desires through determining their intellectual, learning, problem-solving, work, and personality styles. The suggestions are also general enough to suggest different curricula and formats to help the various generations meet their challenges and jobs without restricting their growth.Hughes is especially helpful to the second generation as it meets its obligations and solves its particular dilemma: keeping alive the dreams of the first generation without slighting their own dreams and aspirations. However, Hughes is no Pollyanna-ish softy. He knows that any educational program, no matter how carefully constructed, will never result in all family members happily meeting their potential and increasing family worth without manipulative, dominating, destructive, or self-aggrandizing types showing up. He writes about how to work with these members, too. Most of the book provides clear, precise, easily read discussions of how to encourage successful family development and long-lasting success using the advice and research of historians, spiritual leaders, psychologists, and other experts on family affairs. The book becomes harder to read where Hughes is less sure, where he is still formulating his own concepts and understandings.Persist. His insights are well worth the effort.

"The Cycle of the Gift" by Hughes, Massenzio and Whitaker is a masterpiece to help entrepreneurs, patriarchs, matriarchs and really all family members develop meaningful and healthy dialogue about wealth and inheritance. Like Hughes earlier book on Family Wealth - this is simply written, avoids all jargon and tackles the major questions. Early in the book he states a major question "how can we give and receive in ways that enhance growth and freedom rather then subsidize dependency and entitlement?" He cites a case where the children ask - "Are these gifts really for me? Or are they just tax reduction strategies?"What issues are difficult to discuss and how to break through this impasse is one of the major contributions of this book. Perhaps most significantly the authors raise those critical questions that financial advisors, estate attorneys and really all parents should answer to deal with the great question of the transfer of wealth in ways that build loving sustainable families and self esteem.

James Hughes is one of the premier voices in the generational wealth space. The book is practical and insightful. I own lots of books on this subject and this is one of the classics.

Great book - I thought James depth in historical, psychological and real world case study references made this a relevant and interesting read. The concrete points on putting governance in place made the book worthwhile to read and his depth of experience came through in the text.

Review

The text does an excellent job introducing the historical perspective of operations management. Moreover, it provides information about current techniques used by organizations and payers to improve and/or reward operations such as pay-for-performance. I was pleased to see a robust instructor website that contains external links to related material, relevant case studies, and answers to end-of-chapter discussions and exercises. My sense is that this text translates well to practice and would make it proudly to the office. --Darrell Burke, PhD

I just started a new job in health care management and so I bought this as a review. It is formatted like a textbook and that makes it an easy read because you can flip to the chapters that you need. This was pricey but worth it. There aren't really any other books out there that give an overview of management positions in health care. This book will continue to serve as a great resource for me and I highly recommend.

Easy read and great explanation/ examples

Very useful book for my class

This works great, I am using it for a Healthcare Systems Engineering course but just wish I would have bought the newer edition. I work in a hospital and I notice some is outdated.

Great book, easy to read, and I recommend it for healthcare operations.

This hard cover book has great concepts & ideas. It reminds us not to lead with what we know but with what we read from evidensed based practice. It was publised in 2008

Book sucks

This is a required textbook for a class I'm taking on "Healthcare Operations" at Gonzaga University's MBA program with an emphasis on healthcare management. The textbook is excellent. The chapters are relatively brief, very readable, and the authors make sure difficult concepts are understandable. For example, chapter 7 on "using data and statistical tools for operations management" introduces the reader to the use of statistical and probability reasoning to problem solving in healthcare management. The concepts are understandable to anyone with an average understanding of statistics, probability, and research. All the chapters are structured as follows: chapter outline, key terms and acronyms, introduction (overview), chapter content, chapter conclusion, discussion questions, and references. The chapter content contains many figures and tables that illustrate the concepts explained in the chapter. I found this feature very helpful. Similarly, the questions at the end of the chapters allow students to clarify, expand, and connect the main chapter concepts. The references include a mix of books, journal articles and publications readily accessible on the internet. One of the most helpful features is the online tools available for students to access and practice on concepts and ideas of a more applied nature in healthcare operations. I highly recommend this resource for students as an excellent introduction to healthcare management and operations.

"I'll forever be grateful to musician/physicist Stephon Alexander.... He'll help you see how our awe-inspiring universe is on a never-ending, cosmological riff."―Felix Contreras, NPR, "Best Books of 2016""Interwoven with solid physics and personal anecdotes, the book does an admirable job of bringing together modern jazz and modern physics."―Physics World, Shortlisted for "Book of the Year (2016)""Marvelous."―New Scientist"[Alexander] gives an engaging account of his uncertainties and worries as he made his way in the highly competitive world of theoretical physics, seeking to acquire the 'chops' needed to deal with the formidable mathematics of his day job along with those needed to solo on the sax after dark.... Mr. Alexander's rhapsodic excitement is infectious."―Peter Pesic, Wall Street Journal"In the most engaging chapters of this book -- part memoir, part history of science, part physics popularization and part jazz lesson -- Dr. Alexander ventures far out onto the cutting edge of modern cosmology, presenting a compelling case for vibration and resonance being at the heart of the physical structure we find around us, from the smallest particle of matter to the largest clusters of galaxies.... His report on the state of research into the structure and history of the universe -- his own academic field -- makes for compelling reading, as does his life story."―Dan Tepfer, New York Times"The book's attempt to bring together modern jazz and modern physics strikes me as admirable.... It is an intriguing comparison, and it certainly seems fresher than drawing analogies between classical music and classical physics.... Time to put on some Coltrane and riff some new research ideas?―Trevor Cox, Physics World"Groundbreaking.... [Alexander] illustrates his points with colorful examples, ranging from the Big Bang to the eye of a galactic hurricane."―Down Beat

I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was quite amazing to follow Dr. Alexander's journey to the world of physics through the lens of jazz. I have read review with people complaining about the book being autobiographical or even jumping subjects. That actually is what makes this book so interesting to read. I learned some new aspects of physics, it helped strengthen other elements of physics I had heard about in the past, and it was a pleasure to read about his journey into physics, starting with the first trip to the museum and seeing a display of Albert Einstein.I would highly recommend this book to those with a novice based love of physics, those who love both music and science, and as an amazing way to aspire children, teens, and young adults to reach for their goals in their own unique way. I love that his journey was his and not limited to a one way, boring, pre-charted road.

Although I'm a guitarist with over 40 years professional experience in jazz and other American musical idioms, I don't feel qualified to assess The Jazz of Physics by Stephon Alexander. Hence, the 3 star review, by which I mean my neutrality as to the book's qualities. The question needs to be asked for whom this book was written. A serious musician could not comprehend it fully without also having a thorough understanding of both physics and calculus. I have some college education, but unfortunately not those subjects.Chapter 8: The Ubiquity of Vibration contains several complex graphs and equations, for which it is assumed the reader understands all the math symbols used. I'm not sure what books I would need to study to understand it, but nearly all of Chapter 8 is incomprehensible to me. The book's notes don't explain the equations or the Fourier transform any more than the text does.I love the concept that the universe behaves like a musical instrument, but I have no understanding why the author believes this may be the case.If you are more musician than scientist or mathematician, you might want to read How Music Works by John Powell for a read geared more towards the general reader.

A unique and personal take on 'The Meaning Of It All' physics. Alexander's use of memoir to... hold on... I met Stephon Alexander in 2005 while doing research for a screenplay; he was at the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). Since then I wrote a memoir in which Stephon appears. Here's a bit of it:...I need to explain why I think Stephon Alexander is a special humanbeing, and if you hang in you’ll see how this connects to other things. When we sat down for our interview at Stanford, the first thing I toldStephon was that I’m a dilettante. Stephon stopped me. “That word,” hesaid. “What does it mean?”“Dilettante?”“Yes. What does it mean?”I told him it means that I know just enough about theoretical physics tomake a fool of myself in talking to an actual theoretical physicist.“How do you spell it?”I didn’t really know. I told him there are some “l’s and “t”s but I didn’tknow how many of each, plus there is an “i” somewhere and at least one“e.” Stephon was nodding, taking this in, filing it away somewhere. Then I asked him why he became a theoretical physicist and he saidbecause he was angry at God.Hold on. Let me ask you something. Let’s say that for some reason you’rebeing interviewed because you have expertise at something. Someone, aHollywood screenwriter, say, shows up and you do a formal interview. And let’s say the interviewer starts out by saying something to the effectof how smart you are, but in doing so uses a word you’re unfamiliar with. Here’s the question: Would you stop him and ask what that word means?Neither would I.Why is that? Because our main concern would be how we’re perceived. This would be the case in any situation with a stranger, but especially inan on-the-record interview, and even more especially if the premise of theinterview is that we’re smart.Stephon did not care how he was perceived. Or, rather, he may havecared, but his need to know something, a truth about the world, minorthough it was, was more important. If people – you, say, plus me – worried less about how we’re perceived,we’d worry less about self-image (still another self word), too. Whichmeans we’d be less likely to believe untruths simply because they makeus feel more comfortable about ourselves. Please trust me on something:The belief in untruths is the primary reason why the world is so [screwed] up.In fact, all the reasons why the world is so [screwed] up depend on peoplebelieving untruths. I know that I’m right on this one thing.Stephon Alexander is not one of the reasons why the world is so [screwed] up,which is enough to make him special. In fact, that’s my definition of special,as in special human being. Someone who is not part of the problem of theworld being so fucked-up.And listen. Stephon Alexander knows some secrets of the universe. Trustme on another thing: That Stephon asked me what “dilettante” means andhow you spell it is as much a reason for his knowledge of some secrets of theuniverse as his astounding innate brain power, his intelligence. This angry-at-God thing. Stephon grew up in a poor section of the Bronx,New York. As a child he was confused by all the misery around him. Theconfusion led to anger at God, since he had been told that God createdEverything and Everything must include the misery all around him. Sohe wanted to understand how God could have done this. Stephon, havingbeen blessed with astounding innate intelligence, even as a young personsensed that he would not come to understand about God through studyingreligion or philosophy or anthropology. He was tempted by art, he told me,particularly the art of jazz music. But he decided to dedicate his life to physics, the area of it that looks into first causes. What happened in the beginning. If anyone ever comes close to a real understanding about God it willbe a physicist, someone like Stephon Alexander. It will not be a Popeor an ayatollah or a rabbi or a Buddhist in a monastery or some [screw]ballmother[etc] blabbing away on Sunday morning TV. The reason for thisis simple: Without knowing how things work—what causes what—there isno possibility of knowing anything else. It’s all just words strung togetherand circular reasoning and specious causation and made up stuff and othercrocks of [poop]. All of it.Another thing. That Stephon was tempted to dedicate his life to art, tojazz music, is significant also. In fact, Stephon does dedicate himself to jazzmusic, to playing it on a saxophone, when he’s not looking into first causes. To sum up: In seeking to understand God, Stephon Alexander looks intofirst causes and plays jazz music on a saxophone.I love that.Although he grew up in the United States, Stephon was born in theCaribbean, on an island. I believe that this heritage is part of what makesStephon special. The spirituality of his people. He told me a childhood storyabout his grandmother that gave me the shivers. The island on which Stephon was born is this island, by the way. The littleisland from which I write.#Anyway, it doesn't surprise me that Stephon has written a fascinating book on physics and Jazz music. Not at all. (That his unquestioning faith in Einstein's Relativity theories may be misplaced is a separate matter. Those interested should give Electric Universe theory a look, at thunderbolts.info.)

So you think you're free just because you have the freedom to do and say whatever you want? Erich Fromm shows how this idea of freedom comes as a result of many illusions. Human beings shaped now in modern capitalist democracies are at risk because they are attached to the results that they get within the systems limitations. They have become cogs in a big machine and function only as such. The "gears" psychologically turn us into automatons. All we think about is money. The more the elite can deceive, the more the masses work to please them. Is this this price of progress, or is it sacrificing the beauty of one life, multiplied over and over, for the sake of a few? Oh, this is a worthy read because Fromm really writes well and follows psychological intricacies of awareness and shows historically what happened to lead us to escape from freedom and struggle to embrace it socially and politically.

Published in 1941, Escape from Freedom is considered the masterpiece of the German social psychologist, Erich Fromm. Fromm, who fled Germany during the Nazi uprising in the 1930s, contends in his book that the more 'modern man' becomes independent, self-reliant, and critical, the more he becomes isolated, alone, and afraid.Essentially, he views the rise of capitalism in the late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance to be the beginning of man's conflict with the modern sense of freedom. Within the Feudal system of the Middle Ages, man was shackled to his social position for his entire life. This was before the idea of economic competition was introduced, and man of the Middle Ages had not to worry about climbing the ladder of success. Although the restriction is obvious, Fromm argues that there was also much security in this system that allowed for man to live a life unburdened by the idea of prosperity. However, by the end of the Middle Ages, "the unity and centralization of the medieval society became weaker...In Italy, for the first time, the individual emerged from feudal society and broke ties which had been giving him security and narrowing him at one in the same time." The Renaissance was a splendid time for those who profited, but it also gave birth to the frustrated masses. "The masses who did not share the wealth and power of the ruling group had lost the security of their former status and had become a shapeless mass, to be flattered or threatened - but always to be manipulated and exploited." Although the economic freedom allowed one the ability to gain as much capital as their efforts rewarded, the very idea of capitalism cheapened life. "All human relationships were poisoned by this fierce life-and-death struggle for the maintenance of wealth and power. Solidarity with one's fellow men - or at least with the members of one's own class - was replaced by a cynical, detached attitude; other individuals were looked upon as 'objects' to be used and manipulated, or they were ruthlessly destroyed if it suited one's own ends. The individual was absorbed by a passionate egocentricity, an insatiable greed for power and wealth." Man is inseparable from his possessions. He is willing to betray his own moral standings in order to continue in the game of capital. The middle and lower classes have become a mere fake smile to sell their services.Whereas capitalism only covers freedom in the economic sense, Fromm also devotes a great deal of his book to the relationship between freedom and authoritarianism. This idea can be broken down into two sub-groups: religion and fascism. Although these deal more with the death of individuality in a spiritual sense, they too are intertwined with economic status. In the Feudal system of the Middle Ages, before all of the competition and unrest, Catholicism reigned supreme. "There was much suffering and pain [in the Middle Ages], but there was also the church which made this suffering more tolerable by explaining it as a result of the sin of Adam and the individual sins of each person. While the church fostered a sense of guilt, it also assured the individual of her unconditional love to all her children and offered a way to acquire the conviction of being forgiven and loved by God." However, during the rise of capitalism in the Renaissance, money became the new God in a sense, the supra-personal force that determined personal fate. This left the middle and lower classes dissatisfied, disillusioned, and in search of meaning beyond capital. Thus began the period of reformation, when Calvinism and Lutheranism came into popularity. "The new religions were not the religions of a wealthy upper class but the urban middle class, the poor in cities, and the peasants. They carried an appeal to these groups because they gave expression to a new feeling of freedom and independence as well as to the feeling of powerlessness and anxiety by which their members were pervaded." Martin Luther, described by Fromm as a hate-filled man, championed a religion based on total submission to the authority of God, one widely adopted by persons of similar woe. Luther's ideology offered salvation "by giving up every vestige of individual will, by renouncing and denouncing [one's] individual strength." John Calvin took submission to a new level, introducing a God based in the idea of predestination. In Calvinism, one is destined to Heaven or Hell before birth, accentuating the helplessness exhibited in Lutheranism. Both religions are based in the feelings of vulnerability of their founders, and both took power away from the dollar and placed it back in the hands of a much more cruel and indifferent God. "This picture of a despotic God, who wants unrestricted power over men and their submission and humiliation, was the projection of the middle class's own hostility and envy." Ever since the rise of capitalism over 500 years ago, religion and economic struggle have gone hand in hand. In a world of personal gains, why praise God if you have all of the worldly possessions you could ask for?Fascism, the other half of authoritarianism, is essentially the same as religion, except man takes the place of God. Fromm, who fled the Nazi's, chose to make them and Adolf Hitler the face of his chapter on fascism. He describes Hitler as the epitome of the sado-masochistic character, someone who loved and despised the German masses. He hungered for complete control of Germany (and eventually the world), and this hunger stemmed from anger and frustration. "He felt very intensely the role of being an outcast. He often speaks in Mein Kampf of himself as the 'nobody,' the 'unknown man' he was in his youth." As a young man, he played the role of the masochist until the submission became too much to bear. Hitler took on the role of the sadist and promoted himself as the savior of the German masses who were shattered by the loss of WWI. His Nazi ideals are shockingly similar to that of Luther or Calvin. "The masochistic side of the Nazi ideology and practice is most obvious with respect to the masses. They are told again and again: the individual is nothing and does not count. The individual should accept this personal insignificance, dissolve himself in a higher power, and then feel proud in participating in the strength and glory of this higher power." Naziism wasn't based solely on submission, however; Hitler created a hierarchy in which "everybody has somebody above him to submit to and somebody beneath him to feel power over." His racism and anti-Semitism gave the members of the Nazi party a false sense of superiority that religions didn't offer. This aspect is what sold the German masses on Naziism. It offered them the confidence they sorely needed, but in exchange for their individual identity and sense of universal brotherhood.Religion and fascism were overtly obvious ways to escape the hells of freedom and all of the anxieties that come along with it, but Fromm also investigates how the 'modern man,' with all his freedom, conforms to more hidden forms of authority. In his segment entitled 'Automaton Conformity,' he sheds light on just how highly suggestible humans are to outside opinion. In earlier chapters, he explained how what we view as our conscience, or moral compass, is made up entirely of what authorities around us deem to be acceptable. In saying that, Fromm refutes the ideas that humans are born inherently good or bad, instead stating that any morality that exists within us was instilled in us at a young age. If our individual ethics are a sham, why not all of our thoughts and opinions? Fromm compares the size of the Democratic and Republican parties to that of 'mammoth organizations of industry.' People are frightened of the magnitude and impersonality of the candidates up for election, yet are pressured by the system to vote for one or the other. He refers to the relationship between the candidate and the voter as 'abstract.' Political propaganda misinforms and shapes how the voters think. "[T]hey flatter the individual by making him appear important, and by pretending that they appeal to his critical judgment, to his sense of discrimination. But these pretenses are essentially a method to dull the individual's suspicion's and to help him fool himself as to the individual character of his decision." Fromm likens this kind of manipulation to hypnosis, the implantation of ideas or feelings thought to be genuine to each person. "Ask an average newspaper reader what he thinks about a certain political question. He will give you as 'his' opinion a more or less exact account of what he has read, and yet - and this is the essential point - he believes that what he is saying is the result of his own thinking." Fromm goes so far as to say "for many people an experience which they have had, an artistic performance or a political meeting they have attended, becomes real to them only after they have read about it in the newspaper." Replace 'newspaper' with 'online' or 'television' and he's right on the money. Adopting opinions from outside sources begins in the suppression of critical thinking in a person's youth. We are taught what is right and wrong with no room for doubt. A major problem in the school system is that it teaches students to retain random, disjointed facts in favor of critical thinking. Because the mind becomes so bloated with all of these little pieces of information, it clouds the child's ability to use independent reason. Also in a person's journey to becoming an automaton, our sexuality and emotions are suppressed as well. Children are taught to be ashamed of their bodies and urges, and "[t]o be 'emotional' has become synonymous with being unsound or unbalanced. By the acceptance of this standard the individual has become has become greatly weakened; his thinking is impoverished and flattened." Although the trend of shaming sexuality is at an all-time low, the suppression of emotion has debatably worsened as time has passed. As he points out in a section about the bastardization of serious news, we see dire political situations interrupted for advertisements of soap or wine. "Because of all this we cease to be genuinely related to what we hear. We cease to be excited, our emotions and our critical judgment become hampered, and eventually our attitude to what is going on in the world assumes a quality of flatness and indifference." In summation, Fromm, while still pointing out the small points of why we Americans are free in the popular sense (wide varieties of choices in almost every aspect of our lives), focuses on how our actions, emotions, opinions, and thoughts are either consciously or subconsciously ruled by our feeling of isolation and will to conform. Although he offers a solution to our sense of hopelessness ("Only if man masters society and subordinates the economic machine to the purpose of human happiness and only if he actively participates in the social process, can he overcome what now drives him into despair."), it comes off as an impossibility that not even Fromm believes is feasible.Escape from Freedom is a seriously thought-provoking work by a great mind, but I actually hesitated in giving it a five-star rating. While the only aspect that bothered me about the actual book was its repetition, I couldn't ignore the fact that much of what he had to say has become typical, almost trite, over the years. We as a species have moved into the postmodernist phase where essentially everything has become a joke or a 'meme.' Fromm's once revelatory ideas are now being spouted out of the mouths of every fedora-tipping Redditor or the stereotypical first-year psychology majors. To avoid allowing my judgment to be clouded by my prejudices, I chose to rate this book on its relevance in the year 1941 when it was published. Although it's still an informative read in the year 2015, Escape from Freedom must have been quite a jolt to the armchair thinkers of the 1940s.

The character of authoritarianism is of urgent interest to everyone now, in this world of ambitious new tyrants. How can we understand Trump, Duterte, Putin, Kim, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, and others? Fromm’s ideas about the essential nature of authoritarianism come from his firsthand experience of Nazism and Fascism in Europe. His insights remain compelling and, taken as warnings, frightening. Read with Masha Gessen’s, The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.

This was one of hundreds of books published in the mid 20th-century that struggled to understand the rise of fascism, and how world events got out of control. First published in 1941, Fromm takes a common-sense approach to social psychology and comes up with answers stunningly applicable to the current political situation.

A classic, written by an escapee from Germany early in the Hitler era. Its presentation of complex psychological issues leads the author to make strong general statements as he attempts to communicate these complex ideas to an audience that might not have a grasp of the underlying ideas and therefore will be a bit put off with what appear to be statements without qualification. His major points are very clear; that the freedom now found in Western societies also contain the downside aspects of greater personal insecurity and can lead one to choose to conform in order to compensate for this insecurity. His treatment of this tendency as a major force behind the willingness of people to follow a person who promises to provide the trappings of security through feelings of superiority, coupled with the use of stereotyping and scapegoating of a subgroup to explain any lack a person many feel is explained. I read this enthusiastically as an undergraduate 50 years ago and rereading it today, I still think many of Fromm's are pertinent..

Read this book in seminary 25 years ago. I believe It remains relevant to this day. Would love to be able to sit with Fromm and discuss this book in light of today's society.

This book caused me to think deeper. 3 dimensions deep. It caused me to question my motivations for and definitions of, success.

Excellent book. Like it was written yesterday. Amazing.
