Williams’ story of Durham’s life and times examines his commitment to social justice as it was reflected in his far-reaching subject matter, geographically, politically and artistically.Using precisely selected words strung together in surprising and unpredictable ways [“…Durham met a whirlwind of a man whose hair always seemed to be caught in an invisible updraft”(158).], Williams writes for the mind’s eye, just as Richard Durham did, no doubt because they both have radio world in common as a genre that requires imaginative, vivid yet pithy language. Poet, radio dramatist, journalist, television scriptwriter, political strategist and speechwriter Richard Durham’s artistic vision was beautifully demonstrated in how he wrote about some of the most disparate yet socially significant figures in black and American history: Marian Anderson, Ralph Bunche, Ida B. Wells, Emmett Till, Duke Ellington, Gwendolyn Brooks, Winslow Homer, Adam Clayton Powell, Muhammad Ali, Mary Church Terrell, to name a few. I love this book and am quite sure Dick Durham, my main editor/mentor, would have appreciated it, tool. Williams's handling of the facts of Durham's emblematic career, her prose and her clear and cogent explanation of complicated matters amount to true artistry. This biography unearths not only Durham's career but also many overlooked features of Black journalism, radio and TV drama, trade unionism and political movements

This book is elegant and compelling. It is an extremely significant work that uncovers a previously uninvestigated part of American history. The narrative introduces a quiet media giant whose life story needs to be told. Williams’ research is solid and her years of professional radio experience as a storyteller shine through. I loved reading Word Warrior!
