Review
When Johnson quit her job as the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, the media went wild; lawsuits were filed; prolife advocates rejoiced. Now this former clinic director reveals the details of her dramatic move from abortion rights advocate to "the right side of the fence" and the prolife movement. Johnson began as a volunteer, moving through the ranks until becoming director of the Bryan, Tex., clinic. Then she witnessed an ultrasound-guided abortion, and she changed. "I was taking a new stand, beginning a new life," she says of her move to the other side. This emotional account reveals Johnson's remarkable journey through prochoice thinking, two abortions, her love/hate relationship with prolife advocates outside the clinic, and her eventual understanding of abortion. Prolife advocates will salivate over her story, abortion rights advocates will be skeptical, but those who oppose abortion will find inspiration, education, and emotion. Johnson offers a well-planned, well-written account that will touch nerves on both sides of the issue. (Jan.) --Publishers Weekly Bookline, December 22, 2011

From the Inside Flap
“As I took the ultrasound probe in hand, I could not have imagined how the next ten minutes would shake the foundation of my values and change the course of my life.†Abby Johnson joined Planned Parenthood as a college student because she wanted to help women in crisis―a goal she believed the organization shared. As she rose through the ranks to become a clinic director, however, things started to shift. Finances grew tighter, clinic practices changed, and Abby became increasingly unsettled about what she was being asked to do. But it wasn’t until she helped perform an actual abortion procedure that Abby fully realized what she’d been a part of all those years. In the pages of Unplanned, you’ll also discover: What Abby found so attractive about the mission and goals of Planned Parenthood The personal secret that Abby had kept buried for years The things she’d believed and told patients that she discovered not to be true An insider’s perspective on Planned Parenthood’s practices as well as the heartfelt but misguided efforts of some radical antiabortion activists The courage and resilience she’s seen on both sides of the fence―from staff members to clients in crisis to prayerful volunteers A compelling story of crisis and change, Unplanned is also a reminder of how grace finds us in unlikely places, and how we can all reach out with love to those who stand on opposing sides. Abby Johnson holds a B.S. in psychology from Texas A&M University and an M.A. in counseling from Sam Houston State University. She was hired by Planned Parenthood in 2005 and progressed to the position of community services director and health educator, where she served as liaison between the community and Planned Parenthood as media correspondent. Later promoted to health center director, Johnson ran both the family planning and abortion programs. In 2009 she left Planned Parenthood and joined the local Coalition for Life as a volunteer. She continues her volunteer activities and now works on projects with the national 40 Days for Life campaign. She and her husband, Doug, have a young daughter and live in Texas. Cindy Lambert, vice president and associate publisher at Zondervan, is a veteran of the bookselling industry. For nearly two decades she owned an award-winning bookstore before expanding into leadership roles in distribution, editorial, and publishing in such companies as Ingram, Simon & Schuster, and Zondervan. As a speaker Cindy has addressed audiences in publishing and bookselling conferences as well as churches and retreats. She and her husband, Dave, have six children and seven grandchildren, and live in Michigan.

Wonderfully written book about the journey from one side of the fence, to the other. I was loathe to put it down and as soon as I was done, I needed more information. I bought, The Walls Are Talking by Abby Johnson the next day. I also subscribed to her YouTube channel. I first stumbled across Abby after watching an interview that she did on Louder with Crowder. Before reading this book, I was pro-life. After reading her books, I realize that saying I'm pro-life isn't enough. Change doesn't come from people who sit idly by and keep their opinions to themselves. I have been inspired by her story to become more actively involved, and I plan to do this through prayer, volunteerism and speaking up for the voiceless. No longer, when someone I know personally says that they are pro-choice, will I stay silent and not challenge their views. It doesn't help them, and it doesn't help the unborn or their mothers. However, I also have a new perspective on the mothers and workers in the abortion industry. They are not the enemy. They are just blind to the truth and they need our prayers and love for their eyes to be opened.
Her experience with the abortion of the 13 week old fetus was horrible and I would probably feel the same way. I would not have an abortion at 13 weeks, but that is not my decision to make for another woman. I have nothing against early abortions and yes, sometimes they are necessary for medical and emotional reasons. Making abortion illegal again will never stop it. Women are not going to stop having abortions. My own grandmother tried to abort my jumping off a refrigerator. We will go back to back alley and coat hanger abortions and no fetuses are going to be saved. A women who does not want a pregnancy WILL do what she needs to, regardless of the laws. Sometimes there is abuse involved, rape etc. It is cruel and a violation of human rights to try and force women to carry to term. Religion has no business in politics, so I don't care what your religious beliefs are. You don't push them on others. The majority of women who have had abortions do not regret them, so that is another lie they tell you. I knew plenty of them who did and there is no regret.
I was, frankly, afraid to read this book. I didn't know if I could bear to face what was in it. I want to thank Abby Johnson for her incredible courage and compassion in writing it. There is no doubt in my mind that she has and will continue to change countless lives because of it. She has changed mine. God bless you, Abby. I got through it. I can finally--finally--face the truth, and begin to heal. To my sisters and brothers: the truth will set you free.
I am a slow reader, but I read this book in 2 days, I could not put it down. I have heard Abby on CDs, radio talk shows, seen her on TV and talked to her briefly at the March for Life a few years back. She is an amazing woman who taught me that when I am walking in the wrong direction, God will show me the right direction and put people in my life to help me through my CONVERSION. With the movie Gosnell out last winter and "Unplanned" the movie opening in theaters March 22, 2019, hopefully this book and her movie will show the true horrors of abortion. Her story is worth reading. I don't read books for "entertainment", I read books to learn. If you choose to, you, too, can learn.
New York, Rhode Island, and Virginia just signed laws allowing the killing of innocent life as he/she is being birthed. This is our Holocaust, a blemish on our culture. God will not be mocked. United States of America will pay for the sin of condoning innocent life in and outside the womb. This story is the story of redemption for someone who came to her senses and realized that taking the life of a child doesn’t make another life better it only complicates it.
This book touched me deeply. I am and have always been pro life. I never thought of those pro choice as having a heart. Abby Johnson has shown us in this book the other side that I didn’t know much about. It’s amazing what can happen when we let God take control and scary, too. He had a plan for her and she wasn’t aware that he would use her to further the pro life movement. We all have our own convictions on different causes and don’t think that the other side does too. Thank you Abby for this book, it opened my mind and heart! May God continue to work through you and each of us for the good of mankind. It should be a must read for every pro lifer. I am going to look for this organization right now and donate.
This book was hard to put down. It was well written and her story is fascinating. She tells about starting out as a volunteer at Planned Parenthood and moving up to be the director. In her journey from volunteer to director she starts to question her views on abortion. Because of her changing views on abortion it causes her a lot of turmoil in her career and personally.
The book was well written and was frank and revealing. Every demographic would benefit by reading this book . If you want to learn about both sides of the abortion issue and if you want to understand why an abortion is the taking of a human life , this is an excellent source . That Abby Johnson intimately knows both sides of "the fence" makes this book invaluable .
