Jack Grochot is a retired investigative newspaper journalist and a former federal law enforcement agent specializing in mail fraud cases. He has contributed stories to magazines and anthologies, both nonfiction and fiction, and he has written two other books - Come, Watson! Quickly! and Beware, Watson! Danger!, each a collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures. Grochot lives on a small farm in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA, where he writes and oversees the care of boarded horses. "Saga of a Latter-Day Saddle Tramp" is an excellent depiction of incredible bonding by the author and his two horses and dog. Each trusting and relying on the other for survival within a backdrop of the good and bad of southern hospitality.Since I love animals more than people, this was an easy read for me. I had a horse named Blaze when I was young and worked on a farm for its upkeep. I often went on day rides with my horse making it easy for me to relate to the author’s odyssey.I look forward to more books by Jack Grochot. He fits in with authors (Steinbeck, Hemmingway, Nietzche and others) who did their best works after a sabbatical.I recommend this book to all who love animals and nature.
What a wonderful read! I couldn't put it down. Read it in one sitting, on the edge of my seat! It was my unique pleasure to meet Jack personally before reading the book. This man is the real deal. One needs to ask themselves if they have the courage to do what he has done. My hat is off to him. His love of animals cannot be denied. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and adventure. I'm waiting anxiously for his next book.
The Coen Brothers need to make this story into a movie! Great characters and a suspensful story line that will make to laugh, cry and restore you faith in humanity when our Nation is so divided. This is a perfect book to take on your next flight and after you finish it, you will wish it wasn't over. I hope a screen writer reaches out to Mr. Grochot and makes this epic journey into the next Blockbuster!
Great read! A true story about how the open road that leads to, mostly, a restorative feeling in the belief that there are good people out there all along the way. Also a great example of how the bond of man and animal is just as complex and sincere as then bonds between people.
