Having never visited Shipshewana, IN, I have fallen in love with the wonderful group of people portrayed in Vannetta Chapmans, "Material Witness" book. When reading this book, one is taken to the place and really becomes one of the townspeople who could very well live there.The circle of friends found, in Callie, Deborah, Esther, and their families along with Gavin, Shane Black, and the officials of the town, makes one realize the importance of friends, family, & a loving community. Add to this cirlce of ladies an heirloom quilt given to each that adds a bit of a puzzle to the mystery in town, makes one take to the action really quick. The faith and trust from the youngest (and a Swap) to the oldest is seen when reading this style of Amish Fiction Full of Grace writing by Vannetta.The reader is drawn into all the action from the beginning to the end when the romance becomes fully known in this mystery story.I have now read all of Vannetta Chapman's books with the exception of her newest, A Home for Lydia, which will be started as soon as this review is finished.These books are well-written with all the inspiration of the Amish with a bit of the unknown mystery thrown in that makes it feel really true to life. After learning about the Amish, you do learn that they do have problems just as their Englisch friends do, but it is the forgiving nature and love of the Amish that inspires one to wish that all people could be as forgiving.I loved this book, and can't wait to start the newest read! I loved reading the Amish Proverbs throughout the book. Love, love, loved it! And, all of this from a person who doesn't (used to never) read mysteries. These books I love!
This is the third novel in what, I believe, is a trilogy of mysteries set in an Amish town. Shipshewana, IN.Best friends, Esther, Deborah, Melinda are enjoying the annual Fall Crafter's Fair when Melinda's child witnesses a murder in the yard of Daisy's Quilt Shop. The killer sees the boy and off begins a story of friendship, and suspense.Who is this bold, in your face, and willing to attack in daylight killer? Is he one of the community or an Englischer? Why is it at their friends shop? Was Mrs. Knepp the victim or was the killer after Callie Harper? If Callie, why? What has happened recently to cause this action? The most potent question is: Why us again?The quartet of friends have had their share and more of excitement since Callie moved from Texas to Indiana to take over her deceased Auntie's store. The friendship has grown and blossomed. Marriages, and babies have joined and there is even a romance in store for the Widow Callie. Just when life is becoming 'normal' this happens...why?Well, if you enjoy good, solid, Christian Fiction and a great mystery this novel is for you. It is a great stand alone novel but even better if you have read the series.Please, Ms. Chapman, Please think over making this series into a longer series. I have grown to like these ladies and their lives!
I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! I read all of the previous Shipshe quilt mysteries, and could not wait to download this one on the day it was released. It did not disappoint. The mystery was intense, and had many surprises, twists and turns. Vannetta Chapman knows how to weave a story and immerse her readers into the setting and plot seamlessly. As another reviewer said, I found myself thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading, and could not wait to continue the story. I loved the blooming romance, and the changing viewpoints of the narration. I have read several books by this author, (actually, all she has published!) and that knack for allowing the reader to see what is happening in the heads of different characters, especially the children in her story, only enhance the reader's understanding and empathy for the characters. My only disappointment is that I am now finished with the book and there are no new ones for a few months! This is a must read...you don't have to start with the first one in the series, but doesn't hurt to begin there because you can see Callie's journey to better understand where she is in her life now.
The Amish and Englischer worlds again collide in this 3rd Amish mystery by Vanetta Chapman. Out spills a generous helping of old-world Amish charm, a heart-pounding race for survival, a unique Amish/Englischer friendship, and of course, a little romance. When young disabled Aaron witnesses a murder, he becomes a target for the murderer. Callie and her friends get involved because Aaron is the son of one of the women. Also, the murderer is after the secret of the old quilts that have been bequeathed to Callie, which her Amish friends are helping to restore.This book was the perfect blend of excitement, friendship, Shipshe charm, and romance, plus learning to trust God for unseen outcomes. Great reading!
If you like Amish stories and cozy mysteries, then this is the book for you.Love the characters - both the Amish and the Englisch. These are people you would love to have as family, neighbors and friends. The story line is well written and held my interest from page one. There is a good mystery and a romance story as well. I love that all the characters are strong and intelligent, from the children up to the elders. They are also open and honest with each other. The Amish characters are true to their beliefs and culture. There is mutual respect and acceptance between those who are Amish and those who are not. There is just nothing to not like about this book! I plan to read more by this author. I am so impressed with her writing style and great story telling abilities.
I got the first book of this Amish/English Mystery series from bookbub and discovered a new favorite author AND series! Full characters, friendship, forgiveness, future, hope, murder, jeopardy, suspense, affection and love w/out graphic details. Growing up, no matter what age. Wonderful.
I really enjoyed Material Witness. Could hardly put the book down . We read it out loud to each other at night and it was a great way to relax together. There were several mysteries and each one was resolved very satisfactorily. You won't be disappointed.
