Jane is an intern for a famous event planner and Scarlett is a freshman at U.S.C. However, things change quickly when a TV producer asks them to be in a new reality series along with Madison and Gaby, following their lives as they try to make it in L.A. After signing on, the two friends move into a posh apartment and get into the hottest clubs. Scarlett is skeptical about all the attention, but Jane enjoys being in the limelight. When Jane becomes the show's star, Madison is jealous and plots to bring her down. By story's end, Jane learns that having cameras follow you everywhere isn't what it is cracked up to be. The cliff-hanger climax indicates that there will be more to come. Conrad writes from experience (she stars in MTV's The Hills) and the result is a light read that will leave readers wanting more. DISCLAIMER: I'm 30yrs old, so I was definitely looking at it from a more "mature" view point, than maybe the intended audience; However, I felt the book was very flat. I read it in a weekend, and as I read, I was often left wishing it would "Hurry up & get to the good part.." I love Lauren Conrad's website,clothes & etc...but I just felt LA Candy should've been edited better. The story content was pretty weak and took so much time trying to elaborate on things that were commonly understood. I also found myself wishing that the names that were chosen weren't so "obviously" made up. I don't know if that even makes sense to anyone else but me, but it just seemed that you wouldn't have that many people in the same group with those kinds of names; I guess what I'm saying, is that they were either too crazy sounding or too plain (i.e. Scarlett Harp; Jane Roberts) There weren't many "normal- sounding" names, and it ended up being kind of distracting. I'm glad that I bought the first 2 books together, because the second book was notably better. Again, I am older, so my 15 or 16yr old self might have enjoyed this a little more. It was, however, great for passing the time when there's nothing on tv & you need your LC fix-- just don't expect to be intensely involved.
This book actually surprised me. Despite the good reviews, I had low expectations for it. Lauren might seem very girly and into fashion, but she can write a good novel if she wants to. This novel hooked me, and I loved it. I loved the moral of the fable, because one thinks that that the reality shows are peaches and cream, and the reality is another. A short summary,This novel is about Jane Roberts who moves in to Los Angeles with her best friend Scarlett. Jane is naturally blonde, cute, makes mistakes with her relationships, a normal person, if you will. Scarlett is gorgeous, opinionated, real smart, and has beautiful black hair. A producer discovers Jane and persuades her into this reality show *with Scarlett* and they meet another two girls, Madison *fake blonde with big boobs and wants to be famous at all costs* and Gaby *real dumb*. Jane and her friend soon find out that that fame comes with a price that she's not prepared to pay.
Although I didn't think I would like this book, when I finally decided to read it I did my best to go into it with an open mind. I am not a big fan of shows like "The Hills" and I had heard rumors that this series was similar to the show. I was afraid it would be a book with little substance and lots of fluff. I won't say this book is some profound piece of literature, but it was actually very enjoyable!It didn't take me long to get into the story and fall in love with the 2 main characters, Jane and Scarlett. Jane is a very lovable character, sweet and friendly. Scarlett is lovable as well, but in a totally different way. Scarlett is more straightforward and doesn't tiptoe around people's feelings, but she will do anything she can to protect Jane. As for the other 2 girls involved, Madison and Gaby, Gaby is sweet but clueless....and Madison is a character you will just have to learn about when you read the story.As I said before I was worried this book would fall flat, but I did really enjoy it. There were parts in the book that made me laugh out loud. Little comments between Jane and Scarlett and some off handed remarks that were quite humorous. The banter between the girls reminded me of my friends and how we joke with each other.There is a lot of drama going on in this story, but the reactions and the feelings of the characters really ground this book and make it more relatable. It is about more than just some well to do girls who get a big break in Hollywood. You will find yourself really rooting for Jane and wondering what Scarlett will say next. If you are passing up this book just because of the author, I think you are making a big mistake! This book is a fun read and perfect if you are in the mood for a drama filled chick lit novel!
Given my fascination with Lauren Conrad, I was excited to read her loosely autobiographical first novel, L.A. Candy. The novel started off rather slowly for me, but once Jane, our heroine, and her feisty best friend, Scarlett, were picked to be on a new reality tv show, the story picked up. It was fun to guess which characters and traits were based on real people, but it seemed most characters were combinations of reality and imagination. The behind the scenes look at how reality works was absolutely fascinating. I watched The Hills become clearly less real over the seasons, but it was still enjoyable to watch. It was fascinating to see these characters react to the sudden change in their lives.L.A. Candy is not a great work of literature, but it was a delightfully fun read. It's the first in the series, and I'm looking forward to reading Sweet Little Lies, the second installment, soon. I recommend it to fans of young adult novels and fans of The Hills.
I love the LA Candy series. I ready all 3 books pretty quickly, they are all a very fast read. The characters are relatable and the story is entertaining. This is a very young book so not deep but really fun to read. It was interesting to think some of the things she wrote about were true to filming a reality tv series
This is the first book I've read by Lauren Conrad and it was actually pretty good. It's not really a 'new' idea for a book plot but the way it was written kept me reading. I would recommend this series.
I confess to really enjoying this book. It was kind of a "guilty pleasure" read, and it does a great job of entertaining! The plot--unsuspecting girls stumble into a deal and land their own reality show, then discover how fame changes them--is fun and well-executed. The characters aren't perfect heroines, but they're relatable. The book is a quick and easy read--I read the whole thing on one (admittedly long) flight!
