I used this book along with Bate's and First Aid to supplement my studying for the USMLE Step 2 CS. I highly recommend using this book for this exam as it will provide you with all of the key history and physical findings that you will need to arrive at a differential diagnosis. It also has a section for initial and expanded workups for each clinical problem.The only reason why I don't give this book a five-star rating is because I think it is still a work in progress. The author needs to recruit more editors/contributors--perhaps even by medical students and residents who are still learning the material. The book basically needs meticulous review and revision so that it can fully realize its maximum potential.Here are a few examples of the revisions I think it needs:• Errata need to be discovered amongst a few algorithms.• There needs to be accompanying rationales for the diagnostic workup sections. Some of the listed tests do not seem necessary.• The cases should be removed or there should be example cases for each diagnosis in the algorithm.• Additional information should be added to the algorithms to help further differentiate the diagnoses. For example, the headache algorithm does not differentiate further between a migraine, tension, and cluster headache.
I'm a medical student about to start clinicals and I love algorithms, so I decided to get this book. I like how the author lists out questions to ask as you approach each clinical presentation along with a list in the back detailing the workups for the CP as well. The only thing I would say could be a bit better would be to have more of the presentations listed individually instead of being nested within other algorithms. The other thing that initially held me back was the price, but I had a gift card so I decided to pick it up. Overall I would recommend this book for the algorithmic enthusiast as they make valuable teaching tools as well.
minor warning:pages that are intentionally left blank , no warning on them, so take a minute to figure out if there is a missing page for real or notalso there is a google preview for the previous version of this bookthis book is good for GPs and new Doctors,in my country we studied diseases separately in Med Schooldisease name then symptoms and signssay this is studying forwardsbut when you face a patient you have to it backwardssymptoms & signs > disease name diagnosisno one taught us that in my country,this is what the book is for,i knew this problem when i was in med school and that is how i found the book later :)
Handy and I would recommend owning it but it doesn't seem like they have expanded on earlier editions (other than changing the dimensions of the book which I think was an improvement) and I wondered at the currency of some of the recommendations. I do wish he would update/reprint his book of laboratory tests and explanations.
Awesome book for learning DDx and what labs and imaging to order. I suggest getting it early in didactic year and use it to form differentials. It will help later on for the OSCE. Also, best to get the Kindle version for use on an iPad or Kindle during rotations.
This is a great book for all nurse practitioner students. It is a very nice book to keep beside you even as you practice.
