There are a couple of interesting stories in this book. There is also just enough information provided to give you a sense of corporate culture and espionage - Enough so to make you briefly feel disgusted with and powerless against the various corporations out there (not long enough that you jump off the grid and stop participating in capitalism all together) but enough so that you become tired of the "business as usual" attitude exhibited by all these laissez-faire CEOs.Ultimately where this book fails is in its presentation - There are just too many pronouns and too many back-and-forth hops in time. Also the book does not know whether it is supposed to be an entertaining read, an infomercial, a reference, or an essay. From chapter to chapter your idea of what the book is supposed to be will change. One thing for sure though is that at the end of the book (last 20%) you feel that the authour just gave up - The last part of the book is just a data dump of a few stories that I suppose the authour could not fit into the framework of the previous chapters. The stangest part of all is the ending where the authour goes all public-service and suggests that the corporate spy industry needs to be regulated - Not that I disagree or agree with the statement, it is just another one of those points in the book where you are still confused about what the book is supposed to be.After completing the book my first thought was this book could just be a script for a TV documentary - A one or two hour special on some news channel. Not worth the 12 bucks I paid but if you see it for half that price it may be worth a read to be lightly informed about the world of corporate espionage.

This book is a history of the private detective business with a rather large portion devoted to what is going on in the present.I hoped it would prove illuminating but it simply told me what I expected--that big companies with lots of money at stake use private detectives to learn what their competitors are doing. Duh.Not surprisingly, folks from places like the CIA retire or leave and end up working in these private security firms. Sometimes they cross the line, like they did at HP several years ago. Others are a bit more ethical.

This was an interesting read but was less informative than I'd hoped. The author does a great job of narrating the history of the industry but the cases and anecdotes used provided most of the substance. I would recommend this book for someone looking to gain a conversational understanding of the commercial intelligence industry but it is not a great scholarly work.

This is an interesting, informative, alarming book. It is worth the read, providing insight into an area that most of us know nothing about. Some of the facts become a bit tedious, but all in all they provide necessary documentation. It's a well done piece.

I'm fully satisfied.

Who would have thought a paranoid artist interviewed in "33 Artists in 3 Acts" would lead me to this gem? Answer: spies (they are everywhere)

Thought it was great but lacking. It speaks more to the evolution than to what occurs today, with the historical background and explanation of techniques with a few case studies. It'd be interesting to see more examples of the abuses or how/if these entities supplying corporate intelligence match up against government capabilities. In reality the boom tries to show the evolution of corporate spies as something similar to the rise of PMC's when in reality they're just private investigators

can be found in the pages of most espionage thrillers - and not as exciting.cool look at some powerful business concerns, here and abroad, that might make it worth checking this one out from the library
