This is a great book with clear instructions. Kids will have fun and learn to communicate better together. Amador provides clear step-by-step guides to each exercise, including expected outcomes and the issues and skills addressed by each activlity. A great resource for teachers who want to cultivate a more peaceful classroom.

This book by Shawn Amador is utterly brilliant. I wish I had it when my son with Autism Spectrum Disorder was younger. It might have allowed him to make social progress with less anxiety.Through improv games and social theatre, students learn the rules of social communication without judgement. And actually, mistakes are expect during this skits. Each skit begins with a social mistake. The actors freeze and the entire group discusses the mistakes and ways they could improve the situation. Then the skit is replayed with an alternative behavior from the discussion. Students are encouraged to write their own skits to act out.Social Theatre is a beautiful blending of social stories (Carol Gray) and drama. And this book is full of skits to get groups started. It is perfect for all school age children and adults and people of many different ability levels. These skits can also be acted out with as few as two people.Not only do I recommend this book for teaching social skills to those with developmental difficulties, I recommend it for teaching social skills to EVERYONE.

This is a practical, clear description of how to engage young people in skits that develop their social skills. Amador’s natural voice lets her personality come thru and even while including research and theories to support the recommended practices.. The reader gets a real education about the students’ differences, needs, social outcomes, & underlying theories. The techniques can be applied right away because of their clear presentation.I’ve written textbooks and taught kids, future teachers & inservice teachers. This is a really impressive work of great value.

I am a therapist. I have learned so much about social theatre through this book. I am a very traditional “talk therapist” and this has expanded my mind to whole new ways of creating behavioral changes and helping children in particular become more comfortable in their own skin. I can adapt some of these ideas for my own practice. Thanks for such an interesting, informative read!
